The Shiny Object Syndrome

by lloydpinto on September 6, 2010

This is the most important blog post you would want to read if you wish to succeed on Squidoo and your other online ventures. It’s a disease, a virus with which all of us have been infected atleast once. If you are in the advanced stage of this syndrome –you could be looking at pretty high credit card bills and dwindling bank accounts.

If you are like me – then you know high of “getting Instant Access” to the next big thing in Internet Marketing. The “Push Button” software that will make you a millionaire next month.

There isn’t a week or a month where I haven’t been inundated with mails and offers from bloggers and so called guru peddling their products as the “holy grail” of internet marketing. No I am not going into a rant about how rubbish their claims are or talk ill of their marketing strategies. What I want to highlight is in this day an age of the internet –there are new products and systems that will come up each day. But all they end up doing is burdening us with “information overload”.  This is what the shiny object syndrome is all about. Before we actually master one system, learn the techniques and start applying them regularly – something new comes up.

“This e-book is on sale for only $29 at the launch price with a 90% discount. If I don’t get my hands on it now – I will never get it that cheap”. This is the chatter going on in  your head and before you know you are brandishing your mastercard or visa and salivating at the prospect of another enticing weekend read.

Let me tell you a story. Imagine Roger Federer as a little boy practicing his tennis. He’s doing reasonably okay – working his way up the local tournaments. Now imagine his father saying – forget tennis – look at how much the Beckhams and Ronaldos are making – lets start playing football. So Roger boy spends the next summer playing football. Another summer comes along and Jack Nicklaus wins another Major. Roger’s father comes up to him and asks him to start playing golf – there’s lesser chance of injury – football is too dangerous.

Do you think if this was Roger’s childhood training – he would ever ending up being the greatest tennis player of the modern era (okay Nadal fans –there’s still some time to get there).

This is how the “Shiny Object Syndrome” plays havoc with our mindsets. Just as you are about to settle down and master a particular system – your mind gets diverted and you go off on a tangent.

There can be no long lasting success without consistent action. If you want to see results you have see through a model/system right through the end. You must persist in your thoughts and deeds. That’s what will bring you success.

So should you totally ignore those really great products that are out there. Well look at it this way. Those products are not going away any time soon. The maximum that you will ever lose out on a launch discount is $50-$100 dollars. Now if you ignore those launches and keep working on your sytem to create an income of $1000-2000 each month  – you wont really mind paying up that extra $50 bucks for a really good system that can complement or add to what you are current doing and help you double your current earnings. Wouldn’t you pay $50 bucks extra if you knew you could use to make you an additional $500 a month?

This one liner is one of the best internet marketing advice that I have read

“Find a system that makes you little money and then work that system like never before”.

If you know how to make $5 by building one tiny little lens – how many would 500 lenses make for you – $2500?

What if 50 of those lenses make it to the top tier – how much does that leave you with now – $3750.

See – how you turned knowledge which makes you only $5 into a full scale job replacing income. But if you get afflicted by the Shiny object syndrome and move on to the next shiny bandwagon and abandon your lens building project after having built only 10 lenses making you $ 50 bucks a month- you wont really see those gains.

So the next time you see a launch – by all means opt-in if you wish – get the freebies on offer (offlate – the freebies have been awesome – to say the least), but maintain your sanity, say a polite no when you come to the sales page. Set yourself an income deadline – something like this

“ When I reach an online income level of $400 per month – I will purchase “Guru X’s Shiny Object”

So earn the money first and then go back and buy yourself that present after you’ve really earned it. Guess what – you may have a welcome surprise. That product which you were lusting for is still available at the launch price (so much for fake time scarcity tactics. Psst –don’t tell any one I told you about this)
